NASA Expedition 69 astronaut Frank Rubio is seen outside the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft after landing alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin in a remote area near the city of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. The trio returned to Earth after spending 371 days in space as members of Expeditions 68-69 aboard the International Space Station. For Rubio, his mission is the longest space flight by an American astronaut in history.
NASA/Bill Ingalls NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, returning to Earth after breaking the record for the longest individual space flight in history by an American, will participate in a press conference on Friday, October 13 at 2 pm EDT. Eastern summer), at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Rubio's extended mission aboard the International Space Station totaled 371 days in space. The extended missions give the scientific community a chance to better observe the effects of long-duration spaceflight on astronauts as the agency returns to the Moon through the Artemis missions and prepares for human exploration of Mars.
Media interested in participating in this press briefing in person should contact the NASA Johnson Press Room by 5 pm EDT on Thursday, October 12, by calling 281-483-5111 or sending a email to: jsccommu@mail.nasa.gov . Media that wish to participate virtually must contact the press room no later than two hours before the start of the event. NASA's media accreditation policy is available online. Rubio lifted off on September 21, 2022 along with Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin. The trio returned to Earth on September 27. Rubio's 371-day mission is the longest space flight by an American astronaut, a record previously held by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei, at 355 days.
Rubio completed approximately 5,936 Earth orbits and a journey of more than 157 million miles during this space flight (a first for him), roughly equivalent to 328 round trips to the Moon. He witnessed the arrival of 15 spacecraft and the departure of another 14 spacecraft on manned and unmanned cargo missions.
During his record-breaking mission, Rubio dedicated many hours to scientific activities aboard the space station, performing varied tasks ranging from human health research to plant research. A study evaluated the operation of multiple autonomous robots from space and the challenges that could be posed by remotely operating robots in orbit from the ground. He also grew space tomatoes to test hydroponic (water-based) and aeroponic (air-based) growing techniques instead of soil or other traditional growing media, to help identify ways to grow crops at higher rates. scale for future space missions.
